On November 17, 2017 Executive Director of The Florida Law Related Education Association, Inc. and National Education Chair for the Informed Voters Project of the National Association of Women Judges, Annette Boyd Pitts, and Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince presented at the 2017 National Council for the Social Studies Annual Convention in San Francisco, California. During this interactive session, teachers from Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, California, Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, and more learned about myths and misconceptions about judges and the role of the judiciary, explored the dangers of politicization of the courts, and expanded their knowledge about the judicial branch and judicial selection processes. Interactive strategies demonstrated during the presentation included the case study method, Supreme Court conference activity, analyzing classroom resources for labeling and politicization of the judiciary, interpreting rules and laws, and a variety of small group exercises. By implementing these strategies during the presentation, participants were engaged in the learning process while strengthening their ability to translate these valuable lessons directly back into the classroom.
