NAWJ Judicial Independence Committee co-chair Florida Supreme Court Justice Pariente presented on a panel entitled Different Roles, Different Rules at the Conference of Chief Justices in Nevada. The panel addressed special interest attacks on the judiciary particularly during merit retention elections highlighting efforts to unseat justices in Florida, Kansas, and Iowa. The panel also addressed education and outreach efforts underway to inform the public about the role of the judicial branch, how the branch differs from the other branches, and the need for fair and impartial judges, among other topics. Other panelists included the Chief Justice of Iowa, Mark Cady and Justice Beier from the Kansas Supreme Court. The presentation was moderated by the Chief Justice of California, Tani Cantil-Sakayue, who serves as co-chair of the Informed Voters, Fair Judges Project.
